Magellan 4350 - So Far, Excellent

This is my first GPS although I have borrowed others to use for some long trips. I travel quite a bit with my hobbies and interests. My wife is a horrible navigator that can’t read a map and many times I am driving by myself. I find it hard to read the map and drive particularly unknown territory.

In the few days I have had it, it worked like a charm. I made a trip to a friend’s house in the middle of nowhere that I haven’t driven before. It got me there with the exception of me turning down the wrong dirt lane which I figured out didn’t lead to his house even though it looked like it did. I definitely need and want to get more familiar with using it’s features.

I am really impressed with the POI feature. I can’t believe it has the samll town restaurants in my town. I am sure I will be hooked on this as time goes on especially in areas I am not familiar with.

Magellan 4350 - Excellent GPS features

Updated 12/29/08: I originally posted this review of Magellan’s 4350 after spending several days with one of four I had purchased as Christmas gifts. When one of the intended recipients received another GPS that couldn’t be returned, I found myself with an extra unit which I decided to keep for my wife’s car. After spending several additional days living with the 4350 I’m updating the review to include my latest findings…

As this is a lengthy review, those not wanting to wade through the entire text can see a summary of the pros-and-cons at the end.

First Things First:
Although I don’t own another portable GPS to judge this one against, I do have a factory installed navigation unit in my 2006 Audi and I’ve utilized that for several comparisons.

There are updated versions of the 4350’s operating system and navigation firmware on Magellan’s website. Both are available at no cost and those thinking of purchasing this model should consider the installation of said updates to be mandatory as the improvements are significant. Links on the enclosed CD instruction manual make the process fairly easy. It took me about fifteen minutes to bring my unit up to date. As the 4350’s were just released in September 2008 there are no map updates available or required. All findings posted here are based on a unit updated to the following: OS Version 00.42.01.0919 and Navigation Version 8.3.2.64084.

Startup:
If powered by an ignition controlled power source the 4350 turns on/off with the car. Otherwise pressing the power button for about two seconds turns it on.
Acquiring satellites happens very quickly - we’re talking seconds, not minutes. Only once, inside my house during a very heavy snowstorm, did it take longer (about two minutes) to lock.
In more than a week of using the unit for several hours each day, it never crashed, froze, or misbehaved in any similar manner.

Magellan 4350 - Excellent GPS, Poor Customer Service

It’s been few days since I bought the Magellan 4350. It is an excellent piece of art. It’s ready out of the box. Although I had little difficulty connecting it to my smart phone (8125), it worked very well after that. The FM transmitter is a nice feature where you use the car audio system to listen to GPS directions, MP3 and make your own phone conversations with good quality sound. The Magellan 4350 price is not even comparable to the premium price paid for the GPS option built in new vehicle.

On the other hand, Magellan customer service is very poor. Cannot even get through and talk to technical support for help. I was going to rate it at 4 stars, but because Magellan has many different GPS products with same weak customer service, I decided to fairly rate this unit (4350) with FIVE stars.

Magellan 4350 - A Great Full Featured GPS

I bought the unit at a Black Friday sale for under $200.00. I tried it out on two different routes the first week and it took me where I was going with very little discrepancies in the route. It may look at shortest route to get you there. I like the idea of doubling the warranty if you are an AAA member. Also the many AAA features included in this unit make it worthwhile when you are in an area you are not familiar with.
